Social Networking

Social networking is white hot these days. I mean there are so many sites for people to connect online: linkedin, myspace, twitter, facebook, etc, etc.  I have accounts at all of the aforementioned sites but I don’t really spend a whole of time on any of them.  Why is that?

After some period of time, all social networking becomes annoying to me.  I mean, the real problem with social networking isn’t the thought of social networking.  I actual love the fact that I can keep in touch with old friends, family, etc online.  I’m online all the time anyway, so it makes for a great combination and an efficient way to communicate.

My problem lies more with what people share online.  I mean it runs the whole spectrum.  You get some people who divulge waaayy too much personal information and then you get others who don’t post enough.  I mean, I guess it’s cool if you tell me you’re tired today…but at least make it an interesting message somehow.  On the other hand, if you update your info or communicate one a year…what’s the point?

The key is to find that happy medium and a lot of people fail miserably.  My suggestion would be to treat your status update like a conversation.  If you called one of your “friends” and they said “what are you doing right now”…what would you say?  Would you say “I just ate lunch” or “I’m tired today”?  Maybe you would, but wouldn’t it more likely be “I’m tired cause I pulled an all-nighter last night” or “I ate lunch at McDonalds and it sucked”.  Give people someting to think about, you know, some real insight into your life without telling the whole damn story.  Be real and in the moment.  Don’t be a poser and don’t just post stuff to try and sound cool.  Obviously, your mileage may vary…
