Who enjoys rooting for the underdog? I do, and I think a ton of other folks do too. I think it is part of our human nature to be drawn to the “little guy”. I’m mostly talking about sports, but this transcends sports too. We always encounter obvious examples in sporting events, such as this weekend’s Super Bowl match-up between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. The Colts are favored to win Sunday and the real question that remains is “by how much”.
That said, the Saints are a good team and they aren’t you’re stereotypical underdog. They don’t even come close to matching the underdog status that the Giants relished against the Patriots two years ago. But, New Orleans is still the underdog. I have no real rooting interest in the game on Sunday, but if I had to pick; I’d say I lean towards Indy as the team I would like to see win. Mostly because I want Peyton Manning to get another ring and help cement his legend as one of the G.O.A.T.
However, if the Saints and who dat nation pull it off; I’m cool with that too. Plus, it would be pretty cool to see them bring their first SB title to New Orleans. In that Super Bowl match-up from two years ago, I was ecstatic when the Giants won. I was pulling for them all the way.
One non-sports example that I can think of would be Google. I think most people like to see Google succeed against the large corporations like Microsoft and Apple. Google probably isn’t your typical underdog either, but still the “little guy” when compared to the likes of Microsoft and Apple.
The NCAA Basketball tournament is another prime example of our love for the underdog. I constantly root for upsets and top seeds falling to the likes of George Washington during the beloved March Madness each year; regardless of whether or not it wrecks my bracket.
I truly think that we all must associate with the “little guy”, underdog mentality. Most of us are simple, regular people who go to work everyday, take care of our families, so on and so forth. We all want to see that regular, average guy/team/company get their time to shine on the grandest of all stages; especially against those “evil empires”.
