Bay Area Bizarre

March 9, 2015 may be one of the wildest and most bizarre days ever for San Francisco 49ers fans. Where to begin…

Based on reports the night before we thought Frank Gore was all but gone to the Eagles. Only to find out he got cold feet and who knows where he’ll end up at this point.

Next, we hear Justin Smith AND Patrick Willis may be retiring. The former not a huge suprise as he was already a 50/50 bet to retire. The Patrick Willis bomb was a huge one. Nobody expected that to happen this offseason.

We also received reports Mike Iupati is signing elsewhere too. And, it’s also looking like Michael Crabtree is likely on his way out as well.

Dealing with all of this in the wake of Jim Harbaugh’s departure is tough, but I’m trying to look at the positive. Losing guys like Gore, Willis, Justin Smith, & Crab from the 49ers is brutal. They would clear a bunch of salary cap room going forward and this is one positive. Now, imagine if the 49ers use that cap room during 2015 free agency to sign Torrey Smith. Then, look at all the young stud FA WRs in 2016 to pair with him (Dez, Julio, A.J., DT, etc). You’d be looking at a super young core at the offensive skill positions with two great WRs, Kap, Hyde, and Vernon.

The Niners definitely need to keep drafting well this year, and next, to bridge the gaps with a few of these key losses. A healthy Bowman would be huge for 2015 to stabilize things on defense after the loss of Willis and Justin Smith. The Dockett signing looks to be a pretty smart move at this point too. The Niners also had their bases covered with Gore by drafting Hyde last year. I’m not sure too many teams could have survived the wicked offseason that has transpired. I think that shows the depth the Niners had internally to stay competitive (easily could’ve made the playoffs) in an injury riddled 2014, and then this wild offseason. The real trouble is that the NFC West is tougher than any other division in the NFC right now which won’t make life in 2015 easy.

We already knew 2015 would be interesting, but now it could be even more interesting than we initially imagined!
