Well, first off, we can’t compare normal life to the fantasy world that professional athletes live in every day. Players have had their kids around teams like this forever (Griffey Jr would be a prime example).

I think the White Sox and LaRoche are both right in their decisions. They can make rules and expect players to abide by them. He can walk away to spend time with his son. 

I think the real issue is how it was handled by Kenny Williams. LaRoche walked away and many people thought it was due to his performance slipping, age, etc. The real mess began when reports surfaced about why and Williams fanned the flames in my opinion. Not a surprise given he has no problem being the bad guy.
