The Crack of a Fungo Bat

During the spring of 96, on a Saturday morning much like today (maybe a bit warmer) it was the crack of a fungo bat that set off a series of events I’ll never forget.

There was snow on the ground, but most of it had melted away. We were behind Armstrong High School taking fly balls when Mulvaney blasted a ball toward the creek. Todd McCann dove to catch the ball, slid across a patch of snow, and went face first into the creek. Todd stood up in the creek, let out a yell of excitement, and we all roared in laughter.

Little did I know at that point, as a freshman, how many more good times and lifelong friends I would have as a result of playing high school baseball. My favorite thing I think about EVERY time spring rolls around is high school baseball, my teammates, and coaches.
